Brett Bloom: Breakdown Break Down workshop

2015

1-5 June 2015, 10am-6pm
Applications now closed

How can we build up a culture of survival in the face of climate breakdown? In what ways can we begin to de–industrialise our individual and collective sense of self?

US artist Brett Bloom and facilitator Ximena Alarcón (certified Deep Listening instructor) run a five-day workshop enquiring into a post-oil world. Participants will be involved in reading, listening and discussion, and will also experience embodied learning.

The mornings will be based at Toynbee Studios and each afternoon will be spent in a different London location to explore this envisaged future: a high-rise rooftop, an underground tunnel, a city farm, and wastelands along the river (by kayak).

Accompanying Brett’s Breakdown Break Down workshop are a series of public talks giving an insight into the themes being explored:

  • Petro-Subjectivity: As part of the opening evening of 2 Degrees Festival, Brett Bloom talks about a new way of thinking about the future, outside the terms that oil has forced upon us.
  • Deep Time – Deep Futures: Eric Berger presents his research and work on these concepts
  • The Dark Mountain Project: Charlotte Du Cann and Steve Wheeler introduce the Dark Mountain project and its culture of uncivilisation.
  • New Narratives of Survival and Collapse: John Jordan and Isa Fremeaux focus on building up a new culture of survival in the face of breakdown.
  • Law of the Rights of Mother Earth: Roberto Calzadilla, Bolivian Ambassador to the UK, talks about the country’s efforts to extend rights to landscape.
